70 Km to the southwest of Madrid, lies the great city of Toledo, famous as the ‘City of the Three Cultures’, as it was able to foster, relatively peacefully and during many centuries, people from three different religious backgrounds: Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

The old city is a a World Heritage site, and is located on the top of a hill, 100 metres above the river Tajo, and almost surrounded by it.

A day in Toledo is always too short. Strolling through its narrow streets is fascinating, as you discover an incredible number of monuments that are quite alive, both inside and outside. The Santa Cruz museum, the views from the coffee-shop in one of the Alcázar’s towers, the stupendous Cathedral, and the Jewish quarter and its synagogues, are some of the places you shouldn’t miss.

Lastly, to enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of Toledo, the terrace of the cafeteria at the ‘Parador de Turismo’, on top of a hill outside the city, is the perfect place.

What to buy in Toledo?

One traditional art from Toledo is the damasquino: creating figures with threads of gold and silver that are embedded into other metals by gentle tapping with a tiny hammer. Sword making is also important; this skill began in Roman times, and reached its peak during the Arab rule and the Christian reconquest. Lastly, pottery is another artistic specialty of the city.

A unos 70 Km de Madrid, hacia el suroeste, se encuentra la fabulosa ciudad de Toledo, a la que se conoce como «la ciudad de las tres culturas», pues fue capaz de acoger en paz, y durante siglos, a cristianos, judíos y musulmanes.

El casco antiguo, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad, se sitúa sobre una colina de cien metros de altura sobre el río Tajo, cuyas aguas la rodean casi completamente formando un meandro en su base.

Un día en Toledo siempre sabe a poco. Pasear por sus estrechas calles es apasionante, pues te permite descubrir un conjunto monumental increíble y muy vivo, tanto por dentro como por fuera. El Museo de Santa Cruz, las vistas desde la cafetería situada en uno de los torreones del Alcázar, la estupenda catedral, o el barrio de la Judería y sus sinagogas, son algunos de los lugares que no te debes perder.

Por último, y para disfrutar de una panorámica soberbia de Toledo, la terraza de la cafetería del Parador de Turismo, situado en uno de los cerros a las afueras de la ciudad, es el sitio perfecto.

¿Qué comprar en Toledo?

Algo típico de Toledo es el damasquinado, un trabajo de artesanía que consiste en la realización de figuras y dibujos mediante la incrustación de hilos o láminas de oro y/o plata en acero o hierro y la fabricación de espadas, que se remonta a la época romana y que alcanzó una importancia increíble bajo la dominación árabe y durante la Reconquista, llegando a ser considerada como la mejor industria espadera de Europa entre los siglos XV y XVII. También la cerámica es otra forma de expresión artística en esta ciudad.
