Segovia
This great city is a World Heritage site, and strolling through the old town is a real pleasure. The Roman Aqueduct, the Royal street, the medieval San Martin square, the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, and the Alcázar, are places not to be missed.
Another special attraction of Segovia is its cuisine. The broad-bean dish (known as judiones), roast lamb, and roast pork are its most famous gastronomic specialties. And for those who prefer fish, then trout is the best option.
With regard to good restaurants, two of the ones recommended by the Michelin Guide are the ‘Mesón de Cándido’ and the ‘Duque Restaurant’.
La Granja de San Ildefonso
This is a quiet town 13 Km from Segovia, which started to be developed in the 18th century, after the 'Royal Palace of La Granja' was finished.
The Palace is the hub of a great enclosed area which had 5 gates to enter it: Segovia’s, Queen’s, Cosíos’s, Oven’s (missing), and Field’s (missing).
Three quarters of the enclosed area around the Palace is occupied by the Royal Garden and its stupendous collection of fountains. The rest of the space is home to the population that grew up around the Palace and contains a variety of civic buildings of great interest: 'Guardias de Corps’ headquarters, Royal Stables, House of Servants, House of Canons, and House of Infantes (Royal children).
In this tour we visit the Royal Gardens and there will be time to visit the Royal Palace if you wish (please note that it is closed on Mondays).

The Royal Gardens
These are one of the best preserved examples of gardens from the 18th century.
They were designed to be more important than the Palace itself. King Philip V of Spain wanted them to be French-style, therefore the result was gardens with highly-decorated fountains and sculptures.
The fountains in La Granja play on some days in Summer, depending on the water availability each year. The reason for this is that the water is not recycled, as the fountains’ water system is the original one from the 18th century, and they work by means of height differences and the effects of gravity. Three of the most popular fountains are the Frogs, the Horse Race, and Diana’s Baths.
In the gardens there is a 2.5 hectares hedge Labyrinth which is traditional in classic French-style gardens.
There is also an irregular-shaped pond, known as “The Sea”, located in the highest part of the gardens. Two constructions abut the pond: the 'Gondola House', and the 'Fish Farm’. The pond’s water is collected from the waters of the nearby mountains, and used to water the gardens as well as to drive the fountains.
The Royal Palace
Phillip V of Spain, first Borbon King, fell in love with this landscape and its good hunting, and he decided to build a palace on the site of the ‘San Ildefonso’ Hermitage. To do so, he bought the land from the monks of the Parral Monastery in Segovia, who had a farm and a hostel here. This occurred in the first third of the 18th century.
The Palace is a beautiful example of European palatine architecture, with Versalles-style gardens and fountains. The Palace decoration is sumptuous, as this was the fashion of the times. There are marvellous crystal chandeliers from the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja. There is also an interesting Tapestry museum.
Inside the Collegiate Church, there is a chapel containing the Royal Pantheon, where the remains of the founding monarchs, King Philip V and Queen Isabel de Farnesio, are laid to rest.
The Royal Glass Factory & The Glass Museum
The Royal Glass Factory is a huge rectangular construction covering more than 25,000 square metres, comprising several different buildings. It is from the last third of the 18th century, and was built outside the Palace’s enclosed area because of fear of fire.
The Glass Museum is in the Royal Glass Factory, and has more than 16,000 square metres of exhibitions dedicated to glass and glass technology. Visitors can see historic and contemporary pieces, moulds, machines and tools. Special mention should be made of the Technological Exhibition, the La Granja glass collection (18th and 19th centuries), the European Glass collection (16th-19th centuries) and the Contemporary Artistic Glass room.

Segovia
Esta estupenda ciudad es Patrimonio de la Humanidad y pasear por su centro histórico es una verdadera delicia. El Acueducto romano, la calle Real, la plaza medieval de San Martín, la plaza Mayor, la Catedral y el Alcázar, son sitios que no puedes perderte.
Otro de los atractivos de la ciudad es la gastronomía. Los judiones, el cochinillo y el cordero son los platos más famosos; y si prefieres pescado, la trucha es una buena elección.
En cuanto a restaurantes, dos de los recomendados por la Guía Michelín son el Mesón de Cándido y el restaurante Duque.
La Granja de San Ildefonso
Se trata de un pueblo tranquilo a 13 Km de Segovia, que comenzó a formarse en el siglo XVIII tras la construcción del Palacio Real de La Granja y alrededor de él.
El palacio es el eje de un gran recinto cerrado al que se accedía por 5 puertas: de Segovia, de la Reina, de Cosíos, del Horno (desaparecida) y del Campo (desaparecida).
Tres cuartas partes del recinto las ocupan los Jardines Reales, con una magnífica colección de fuentes. El resto alberga a la población que fue creciendo en torno al palacio y cuenta con un conjunto de edificios monumentales de gran interés: Cuartel de Guardias de Corps, Caballerizas Reales, Casa de Oficios, Casa de Canónigos y Casa de los Infantes.
En este tour visitaremos los Jardines Reales y habrá tiempo para visitar el Palacio Real si así lo deseas (y siempre que no sea Lunes, que es el día de la semana que está cerrado).
Si prefieres visitar la Real Fábrica de Cristales en lugar del Palacio Real sólo tienes que comentárselo al conductor (también cierra los Lunes).
Jardines del Palacio Real
Son uno de los mejores ejemplos que se conservan de los jardines del siglo XVIII. Ocupan 146 hectáreas, de las que 67 son auténticos bosques.
Se plantearon para tener más importancia que el propio palacio. El rey Felipe V quiso que fueran al gusto francés, lo que dio lugar a un jardín con abundantes adornos en las fuentes y esculturas.
Las fuentes de La Granja las encienden algunos días del verano, en función del agua disponible cada año. Esto es así porque el agua no se recicla, pues el sistema de surtidores de las fuentes es el original del siglo XVIII y funcionan por el desnivel y la fuerza de gravedad. Tres de sus fuentes más populares son la de las Ranas, la de la La Carrera de Caballos y la de los Baños de Diana.
En los jardines hay un Laberinto de setos de dos hectáreas y media, típico de los jardines de estilo clásico francés.
También hay un estanque de forma irregular, al que llaman El Mar, situado en la parte alta de los jardines. Y en la meseta de El Mar, dos edificaciones: la Casa de la Góndola y la Piscifactoría. El agua de este estanque proviene de arroyos reunidos artificialmente y de las aguas de Peñalara, y se utiliza para regar los jardines y hacer funcionar las fuentes.
Palacio Real
Felipe V, primer rey Borbón, se enamoró del paisaje de la zona y de las buenas condiciones para la caza, y decidió levantar un palacio en el lugar en que se encontraba la ermita de San Ildefonso. Para ello compró los terrenos a la comunidad de monjes del Parral de Segovia, quienes tenían aquí una granja y una hospedería. Esto ocurría en el primer tercio del siglo XVIII.
El Palacio es un bello ejemplo de arquitectura palatina europea, con jardines y fuentes de estilo versallesco. Su interior está decorado con gran suntuosidad, según el gusto de la época, y cuenta con estupendas lámparas de cristal procedentes de la Real Fábrica de Vidrio de La Granja. Igualmente alberga el interesante Museo de Tapices.
Dentro de la Colegiata hay una capilla en la que se encuentra el Panteón Real, donde descansan los restos de los reyes fundadores, Felipe V e Isabel de Farnesio.
Real Fábrica de Cristales - Museo del Vidrio
La antigua Real Fábrica de Cristales es un enorme conjunto de edificaciones que suman cerca de 25.000 m² de superficie construida. Es del último tercio del siglo XVIII, y se construyó a las afueras del Real Sitio por temor a que pudiera originarse algún incendio.
El Museo del Vidrio se aloja en este complejo y ofrece más de 16.000 m² de exposiciones que permiten contemplar piezas, lámparas, moldes y numeroso instrumental y maquinaria empleados en la industria vidriera. Hay que destacar la Exposición Tecnológica, la colección de Cristal de La Granja (de los siglos XVIII y XIX), la colección de Vidrio Europeo (del siglo XVI al siglo XIX) o la sala de Vidrio Artístico Contemporáneo.
